While these look ugly hanging on the rim, they have two major advantages over the in-tank cleaners. First, these are much more economical. The chemicals are released only upon flushing. In contrast, the in-tank cleaners are constantly submerged in water, regardless if you actually use the toilet. So even if the toilet is used only once a month, the tablets will still dissolve and disappear. For a single person who's rarely home, this rim cleaner can last several months.

Second, some claim that various chemicals, especially bleach, can harm the plastic and metal components inside the toilet tank. This is problematic because some parts are submerged in the treated water 24/7. It's a non-issue with these rim cleaners because they have no contact with the tank.

These are also more effective at dispersing fragrance.

I just noticed that the fragrance is lavender. Most of aromatherapy is bogus but lavender is one if the few scents scientifically proven to work. Apparently, it induces calm and sleepiness. So if you're one of those people who frequently fall asleep on the toilet, or while urinating, you might want to avoid these. Heh
