Why buy one of these vs the 2000 or 3000 series that can be found for $30 - $40?

No real reason to buy at MSRP over the cheaper ones. But at this price, it comes with a nice glass charger, pressure sensor and probably a charging case. Some of these expensive models come with couple of additional brush heads. But the BestBuy specs shows only one brush head included.

I read somewhere that the cheaper models' batteries changed and they're basically like a toy battery and don't have the same sonic effect. Something along those lines.

It's the motor not the batteries. Copy/paste from a forum:

On the original 4100... There is a very beefy copper electromagnet vibrating a rare earth magnet on a steel shaft 62000 rpms. All of this tightly kept in an all metal chassis. This drive is frictionless and when it's not, it's adjustable if you know what you're doing. On the new 4100, it's a $0.05 brushed dc toy motor wrapped entirely in cheap plastic. If you were going to give away a sonicare toothbrush in a Happy meal, this is how you would build it.

I bought the 4100 last year during the holidays for ~$40 and it has the pressure sensor and the Smart features and came with one brush head. I love it and there's no feature on this model that would make me want to spend the extra $60.
