No, in the U.S. it is on the Honor System. I believe on the last page of check-out there is a notification box you check/agree stating you are eligible for the Edu discount. Outside of that, no verification needed or required,

Also note that the "upgradeable storage" on the Mac Mini is not a standard SSD, you would need to buy a replacement storage module directly from Apple or eBay used and use special Apple software to "pair" the NAND to the controller.
Do they come by often? I've been waiting for a larger screen one, too.
When I run LLM (8b or 14b) locally, 16GB is not enough for multi-tasking.
