No, those claims are unfounded. It's not anything recent either, it was just a few forums posts from the past 2-3 years about users having issues seemingly after an update. Louis Rossman just now made a video about it which is why it's getting attention but he's waiting on official response from Brother. They still do not require OEM toner

Man what happened to the $100 printer
Same exact price at Staples, and at Staples you get $62 back in Staples rewards money, making it a much better deal.

FYI.. It appears that Brother has gone to the Dark Side with it's latest OTA update, NOW requiring Brother branded toner. Very sad!

I think a combo of inflation and the fact most individuals (probably) aren't printing enough with a laser printer to buy multiple toner cartridges in a printer's lifetime to make subsidizing the printer's cost through supplies a viable business model. Then all the 3rd party toners further cut into that.

FWIW I've personally never had much luck with the $100 all in ones. They'd last a 1-2 years (at best) and all of their other functions were pretty poorly implemented or barely worked. I'd rather a slightly better printer, with auto duplexing, and decent features that might last me a decade of light use.

Duplex seems to be for printing, not scanning.

true. The scanning mechanism does not have a way to flip pages over

Lack of duplex scanning breaks it for me but I'd happily trade away the fax feature.
Brother mfc-l2717dw looks like it's good for my use case but apparently doesn't exist? Or the
MFC-L2900DW for fifty bucks more.

Really hope that's the case. I'm trying to find tangible facts on this before proceeding. Right to repair law in California makes this illegal

I have a similar Brother machine about 8 years old and works flawlessly. Wireless printing, duplex printing and scanning and cheap generic toners. Paid $100 refurbished back then.

still rocking my 2280dw printers and even replaced the little plastic paper tray engaging gear with the tiny plastic nibbing that breaks a couple of times.
