I bought this game on a whim years ago when buying my switch. I had never played a Xenoblade Chronicles game before.
I played it right when my first born (a son) was born. I got super attached to Rex as a new father, and my heart absolutely broke for him when he went through those challenging moments towards the end of the game. Was also surprised (in a good way) with the twists the game throws. I loved Rex and the whole cast and the story.
I put 250 hours into that game and it vaulted into one of my favorite games of all time. The game made me buy XC1 DE (enjoyed the story, not the combat system) and XC3 (arguably the best game in terms of story and combat and another favorite game of all time for me), but nothing will compare to the emotional attachment I have with XC2 due to the unique experience I have with Rex and new fatherhood.
Happy to see others that can look past the bad rap this game got and enjoy it. I can't wait till my son is older and he can play it so I can experience it all over again with him.

You don't "Need" to play Xenoblade 1 to enjoy it. It's an amazing game on its own.
However I'll just say that it is just a bit more enjoyable if you also played the first game.

This game is so good, they made standalone DLC that's essentially its own game with new a new battle system.

Actually with tax it's $55 per game so not that great
The Japanese voice cast is very solid and the main characters are quite likeable.
Combat is a bit complex and can be confusing at times. In the DLC Torna the Golden Country combat is greatly simplified and if you want you can technically use auto-battle for like 99% of the entire DLC. The music score is really amazing especially "Counter Attack" and "Drifting Soul" , two very memorable songs.
I understand it has some flaws like the gatcha approacch for getting some rare blades and confusing map navigations but the strengths really outshine the weaknesses.
If you have Switch Online membership the gatcha pains can be mitigated by upload/download save files until you get all the desired rare blades. (that's how I did it)
I spent probably 200+ hours and at least 50-60 more hours on the DLC so it is definitely worth the price. There is just a lot of contents packed into this game. There is just a bit of a catch is that a lot of the contents require some amount of grinding and you need to use the gatcha approach in order to get many of the blades before you can even get to their personal stories.
How do you like this one compared to 1, 3, and X?
There is a DLC for the game that is sold as a seperate game because it's so big and slightly different from the main called Torna. It's the prequel for the game. To me, most enjoyed playing right after XC2 as you get the characters filled out a lot more. XC2 also really heavily rewards exploring, providing upgrade materials and unlocks that make you much stronger. Even with the boosts, there's a hefty post-game that is rewarding and fun.
Pacing in XC2 is a lot more even than XC1, which you might expect because the writers understood where they wanted to go. Monolithsoft, the makers of the game is now part of Nintendo but luckily is still making the same level of games and appears to have enough autonomy to do so.
XB1: Best OST, interesting characters, acceptable story and serviceable combat.
XB2: Best characters, fun combat( but a bit complex), lots of contents but require some grinding of skills and gatcha if you aim to unlock 100% contents. IMO best story and amazing OST.(only surpassed by XB1 main theme IMO)
XB3: Maybe most optimized combat. Blend characters (The main protagnist is boring) but if Existentialism and "meaning of life" are your thing you may llike it more than me.
Personally I don't pllay games to learn "meaning of life". Overall most optimized gameplay
and exploration. (much better navigation than XB2)
That's said to me the DLC for XB3 is the best part of XB3 because it covers the aftermath of XB2.
To me XB2 > XB1 = XBX > XB3
But I haven't finished XBX so my impression is based on only the first few hours.
XBX is a totally different game as it has much more limited story contents but focus on the size of open world, exploration and contents.
In addition, XB1-3 has the same composer but they used a different composer for XBX.
My understanding is that the parent company of Monolithsoft's parent company was Bandi Namco and then Nintendo... Not aware of them being acquired by Microsoft...
