You're correct that the base model is great for most people but this has the M4 Pro processor and not the standard M4. The M4 has 4 performance cores and 6 efficiency ones. The M4 Pro has 8 performance and 4 efficiency cores.

This Mac also has a 16 core GPU versus the 10 core one in the base model. Memory bandwidth is higher too. This Mac can support 3 6k displays versus the base model's 2 6k and 1 5k. It also has Thunderbolt 5 instead of 4.

Not everyone needs those improvements, but they are substantial for some people and easily worth the price difference for people who need them.
Check the Apple Refurb store. Carries the same 1yr warranty, can add Applecare and can stack edu or other discounts.

I grabbed an M4 Pro 12cpu/16gpu +48GB Ram+2TB SSD for $1800 two weeks ago. If I built it outright, it was about $2400.
It's $1189 for those who have micro center nearby

Price matched at BB for $1189. Thanks

How do you apply edu discount on refurbished?
Login to the edu site first, then scroll down and click on refurbished. They stack for Military, I assume they stack for edu as well, but I am not 100% sure.

So edu refurbished is showing more than just edu for base mini :

Look at a different model than the base.

And also, maybe it doesn't stack. All
I know is that my discounts stacked and I saved $600 vs buying new without any discounts.

Also getting a pro processor with a few more cpu and gpu cores. But yeah, a couple more $$$ will get you a MacBook Pro when it goes on sale with same specs. This a bad deal.
More like 500 more, which is way more than a couple $$$.

Education discounts have never stacked with refurbished.

So you are paying $700 for 8gb more memory and 256GB storage? IMHO, 24gb vs 16gb is not that different for most user, the base model is still the best deal

Didn't have a clue. I always use Military and that discounted has stacked for years. 😂

TIL mac mini only has base M4 no m4 pro.

This is incorrect. Everyone commenting that this is a price bump for only more ram & storage are overlooking that the chip is the M4 Pro.

It's fine if you aren't interested in this configuration and price. But this is like a Mac Mini Pro vs Mac Mini Air.

That commenter was being sarcastic as a way to subtly point out that this has the M4 Pro processor.

I went ahead and price matched with BB as well, no microcenter, but I'll have it tomorrow. Amazon was looking at a couple weeks out. Looking forward to upgrading my 16GB M1.

They didn't use a /s so we have to assume the meaning at face value.

If you're not into Mac's, why come into these threads and complain?
Because some android and windows users are angered that there are other choices, and only want their preferred platforms to exist.

I find them to be irksome.

Not sure why the thumbs down. The same processor with 256gb of SSD and 16gb of ram is half the price. Apple charges way too much for ram/storage.
No.. You're referring to the base M4 chip. This is the M4 Pro. It's substantially more powerful.

I have this same spec Mac Mini, got it when Micro Center had it at this similar price about a month ago. I upgraded from a 2019 MacBook Pro. I've been using it to video edit with Final Cut Pro, and it's been absolutely phenomenal. It has handles every single task I throw at it with ease, and it's whisper quiet. I just recently rendered a 4K 18GB video, and it was wayyyyy faster then anything I was getting on my MacBook. My only gripe is the storage amount, I wish Apple didn't charge so much for more, but there are plenty of external options out there for cheaper and they work well.
