It has covered drift for mine. Just know they refund purchase price, not replace.
Does anyone know for certain if the Walmart protection plan will cover drift? That's been my biggest problem with these Microsoft controllers. I was thinking of getting the 3 year coverage for $5, hoping I would be able to get it replaced whenever the drift starts. After owning 4 or 5 of these controllers, I'm 100% confident this one will eventually start drifting, too.

Did you have this issue from more than one retailer? Now I'm concerned too

Do these need AA batteries or can they be charged via USB C out of the box?

2 AA Batteries required but you can put rechargeable batteries as it always been since 360. PlayStation controllers are rechargeable out of the box which Microsoft should copy.

Same, and it's why I will only buy these from a local retailer I can return them to easily.

It used to be you could rely on these being fine out the box, but those days are long gone it seems. I bought two off Amazon to replace old 360 controllers that were just worn down after lots of years of use. One was good, the other had a cosmetic defect where the shell is not seated above the battery, or a clip is broken. Amazon sent me a replacement for the cosmetic one and it had a sticky A button and drift on the left stick. You can't replace twice, just return, so I decided to make a claim on the good purchase with those issues. The replacement controller had a sticky B and A button. It was wild too, the B button would be hard to press, but then be fine for a few more presses then be hard to press again. Since both were replaced my only option was to return. Major pain in the butt and I know it's why others on here will only buy them from retail so they can test in store and return immediately if it's bad. There are some posts on here about going through 4 controllers just to get a good one. I bet the other three were sold as open box new on eBay and such.

Plan covers:

Mechanical & Electrical Failures
Item Failures During Normal Use, or from Normal Wear & Tear
Other Common Malfunctions

2-year plan is $3
3-year plan is $5 (should be less than $4.5 since 2-y is $3, IMO)

From my experience as long as you have ANY issue, walmart has never given me any problems on returns, and yes i have returned controllers, 2....one from the series x and another one for drift.
