On a brand new 9.2 receiver with a 3yr warranty? No.
If you ever used receiver that did correction you would know. it just clearly sounds better. And it's not doing it by adding some kind of sound effect or anything.
The license itself is $349 from Dirac directly. It's really good software, but you may need to tweak the final result. The universal crossover may be a deal breaker for some people.

Dirac is better than the MCACC or AccuqEQ calibration software these receivers usually come with.

Does anyone know how a Sonos certified works? I'm hoping that means I can play what's on my receiver on all my other Sonos devices and control my receiver as though it was a Sonos device as well.

Scooped one up. I had ordered the Denon 970H that recently popped up and then had the total brain fart realization that it could only do 5.2.2 and not the 5.4 I needed. Luckily I was able to call and cancel it, even after it was shipped (within a couple hours of ordering.)

I've been using a Yamaha RX-V2085 for some years now and its done well I guess. I don't have an ear for audio but its the features (and how quickly the stuff becomes obsolete) that bothers me. Hopefully with the 4K/120 and VRR support I can actually plug things directly into the receiver again.

Curious to try a Pioneer receiver. Thanks for the deal!

Is Pioneer still good? I'm not constantly following home audio, but it seemed like they disappeared from the AVR game for a while.

Looking to do 3.1.6 - L/C/R. 2 high in wall speakers up front, 2 in the middle ceiling and 2 above/just behind us in the ceiling. Thoughts on that?

Also, mainly thinking speaker placement wise, any recommend the VSX-LX505 deal over this?

Thanks!

Tempted by this, but there is no support for old video devices; it only has HDMI in, no composite or component.

I bought this a few weeks ago to replace an Elite 301. The 301 was a rock solid unit. One thing to note with this one, is I seem to have to have the volume up about 10 digits higher for the same decibel level vs the 301.

Example, watching T2, 4k, it was very loud at volume level 26. With the 305, for that same decibel level, I have to have it around 18.

I have not set up dirac or done any other special calibration (did about the same with the 305 that I did with the 301)...but so far that is the only noticeable difference between the 2 that I have experienced in my very limited usage.

I'm just looking for value, is this in the ballpark for Black Friday pricing?

Only will do 5.1.2
Dirac intrigues me, but haven't bought a receiver in years so no brand allegiance though I've had 2 Yamahas. Passed on 2 Denon deals and the onkyo as well just because BF has been around the corner.

Is Dirac live some sort of bullet proof correction that makes it the most important feature in a receiver?
Only if your room is full of flat walls and hard floors making reflections a problem. In other words a well treated room won't need this. Helps a bit in the lowed end frequencies though. Certainly not a must have.

I have had this receiver last year. It's a good deal for sure.

1st sorry but 3.1.6 is not ideal for an object based setup.
You would be better off doing 5.1 then figure out if a proper 5.1.4 is possible in your environment.

2nd if I recall this receiver & the 505 do not support 3 pairs of object based speakers.

Is this worth the extra $250 over the Denon 970H? I'm not immediately looking to setup Atmos but wouldn't mind the option to in the future.
AVR-S970H here and very satisfied with audio quality and build. But then I have no need for 9 channels (or space). Actually 5 is more than enough for me.

I am also curious. My receiver sounds awesome with minimum setup from me. Why would I need correction?
In a small room you might not. An apartment living room often needs very little and you can actually sound really good with just a simple 2.1 setup if you get quality speakers and a decent amplifier. The room correction software really starts to pay off when you're talking about a 25x25 living room with hardwood floors and a bunch of various things and vaulted ceilings with crazy angles. You can get the timing right. Now as far as the equalization, that would be my only complaint because not all of them allow you to do the final tweaking and if they don't you're basically stuck listening to what some guy thinks is supposed to sound good. In my experience it's often too flat. Too forward and it will sound fine with movies but when you start playing music you'll find yourself wanting the 1-3khz range less pronounced

This has 9 channels, you only need 7.
This may not be the best value.

Im not sure you will find a 7.2 with Dirac let alone for a value price.

I had the Pioneer 305 and returned it…. Surprised by Sony AN 1000 more modern and sounds better https://youtu.be/rjdz3b4DEbI?si=XE2t0rgTs39IDKez
