I was a bit surprised by the assortment that comes in this 270-piece set, particularly for the 1/2" ratchet. In the 1/2" size, where presumably you'd be looking for the most torque, it's all 12-point sockets and no deep sockets.

See here for the full list of what's included [thdstatic.com].

If you are looking for a comprehensive set of driver bits, this set seems to deliver, but of course you could buy a much higher quality comprehensive driver bit set in a compact case for $25.

If you don't work on cars and just want a good household ratchet/socket set, my preference would be the Husky 94-piece (which has no 1/2" ratchet) in a much more manageable case (it weighs 20 pounds less) for half this price.

Here is a set of sockets that contains a 27mm: https://www.amazon.com/Sunex-2569...B00MPQ88RY

I have this set and it's pretty good!

But if you are wanting a general mechanic's set to get started with DIY, I really like the Dewalt sets... all six-point, less bits. I bought my son the 226-pc when it was $150 a year ago: https://www.dewalt.com/product/dw...large-case

Dewalt has a 192-pc that is a good setup, too. And it's currently $160 on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DWM...B01BHJE0J4 That would be my pick if I was buying a set today.
This Dewalt at HD looks like a little step back from that, but it's closer in price to this Husky set. https://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWAL.../304217698

Wonder if this set is any better than the $99 Kobalt one at Lowes.

I saw this in-person and thought this was a pretty good price. The plastic case with shelves might not hold up great over the years, but I can't be sure. I personally prefer my Dewalt costco wrench set from years ago.

I put together a fairly extensive comparison list for all the sets that went on sale for BF in 2021. Most of those sets are still the same.

The HF Pittsburgh 301 piece is still the best set out there when it's on sale below $179 which it does every few months and every BF for the last decade.

It's the only set which includes a 27 - and then goes two steps further and adds a 30 and a 32. You'll also have the equivalents in SAE in the set if you run in to rust or damaged bolts and need a slightly different size. See my comparison chart above for the full kit contents and compare.

Whoever put together the list of the pieces included in that HF 301 kit actually works on cars. Marketing & finance people assembled the other sets, they're full of 12 point sockets, often missing commonly needed sizes, and use useless bits to inflate their counts. There's a reason Derek from Vice Grip Garage buys one for all of his travel revivals when he flies in.

Also it's a latching suitcase style with removable trays, so you never have to worry about the drawers which seems to be the chief common complaint with those style kits. I have a few drawer style kits as well and I really love just being able to set the HF trays out and keep working instead of messing with the drawers of the other ones.

I would highly recommend the Harbor Freight or Husky over the DeWalt. The primary reason is that if you break a socket or a tool you can get lifetime in-store replacements. The DeWalt set will have you spending time talking to a foreign customer service rep and make you go through an extensive mail-in process that takes way longer.

I have this set. Although it used to be in a steel case. It's a nice beginner set or your average DIYer.

If you're looking for a lot of minor small bits which over-inflate the piece-count, then this set is pretty good. If you're looking for the most sockets, then this set is much better… https://slickdeals.net/f/17862735-dewalt-chrome-vanadium-mechanics-tool-socket-set-192-piece-w-case-154?p=173679315#post173679315

I just bought this set yesterday and I'm disappointed.. have a few husky sets I like and they're good value tools usually. The drawers are very hard to pull out and put back in, they stick to each other and you have to use both hands to pull them apart and try to finagle it back into its spot. The small bits take up most of the bottom drawer and that's how they get the large "270" piece in there, but it'd be better to go with the craftsman deal than this.

I'm returning my set today to get the craftsman myself
