FWIW, I checked these out in Lowes and was not impressed.
Lots of wasted space (though you could store other tools in that space I suppose), and the 1/2 sockets were 12 point not 6 point, while the 3/8 were largely 6 point. I'd want the other way around, or preferably just all 6 point, which is less-likely to round off stubborn nuts/bolts.

I think the HART or Husky kits might be better.
Personally, I wouldn't want the HF Pittsburgh stuff as my main mechanic tool set. I've broken a number of their sockets on tough jobs. Don't get me wrong … I love HF and they have great prices on some basic tools. I wouldn't hesitate to buy their stuff for casual use (and I do), but it's just not really great quality. Sure, they swapped out the broken stuff for me, but it's a huge hassle to deal with if a socket breaks in the middle of a big job. On the other hand, I have a Craftsman set that's held up really well and I've never actually broken one of those sockets despite some tough jobs. It's an older set, but it's not the really old U.S. - made stuff. And yes, I'm sure some people have broken Crafstman sockets, as they're not spectacular. But they just seem a lot better than the Pittsburgh stuff from what I've seen.
I think that's the first time in history that anyone has used the "buy once and cry once" phrase in relation to Harbor Freight Pittsburgh tools.

The 262 piece one for $129 on Amazon looks like a better deal to me anyway. I could use some of those additional sockets.

Although it's nice to have tool storage, you certainly are not kidding about the wasted space.

Bought one of these for $99 in 2019 on Black Friday when I worked at Lowe's. I still have this set and have used it on hundreds of projects. Not the best set ever by any means but it should be more than enough for average homeowner use.

Any opinions on the quality of new Crafstman tools?

They used to be very good, under Sears. Then went through a few changes near Sears wanning days through to today under Lowes. Just wondering how they currently compare.

Not the best set for a mechanic. Skipped some sizes. 1/2 drives are minimal

Just buy once and cry once.

This will cover everything you need for any mechanical work that you would encounter on average basis and have you covered for life and the warranty work is pretty easy compared to HD or Lowes.

It's not a huge difference in finish or overall quality, but I do prefer the pre-2013 stock that were generally all made in USA. Now it's all Chinese or Thailand made, which are probably more likely to fail. If you can find an older set on FB marketplace (especially a large set), that's a keeper.

At one point B&D promised to start making them in the US again, but I don't think that ever happened.

I've broken at least six wrenches from HF.. The steel they use is soft and brittle, like it was from India.
