I do not recommend these. I have 4 spread around my house and they tend to drop connections. I checked to see if there was a Merlin firmware and unless I overlooked it, there is none. I only stick to this because it has a separate 2.4 channel that myq garage connects to. I used to have orbi and to link but they won't let me separate the channels.

This model is listed if you scroll down. I've been using the GNUton with my XT8 for nearly 2 years no issues. Maybe this firmware will work better.

These work okay. As access points they are solid. As routers not so great although I haven't have to reset it manually in a while. I do have the routers automatically reboot once a week.

I have some at work and at home with stock ASUS firmware (as APs and as mesh routers). The one setup as a mesh router at work and home needs to be rebooted every few months although lately I haven't. Maybe the firmware got more stable?
I've never had to rest the ones set as APs.

I'm maturing into a seperate OPNsense or PFsense firewall and have to flash these with openwrt or similar so i can still take advantage of a guest Wifi/VLAN. That's the only way I can have guest Wifi with a separate firewall/router.

I bought the ones for work new and the ones at home used from Amazon warehouse. I think it was $170 or $150 for two depending on condition.

I had these in my old house for over a year. They are maddening. When they worked, the speed was superb. But always, there would be disconnects due to satellite loosing connections. If I recall, it was caused by firmware updates. Too bad, they had 2.5 gigabit ports too.

I have the XT9, and they work really well, pretty stable. I use them with T-Mobile Home Internet.

I've been running the ET8 since they came out. Overall, they are a solid mesh system. The ET8 comes with AI protection, VPN, parental controls, adaptive QOS, etc. Even with most of its features activated, I have no problems getting over 1,000 mbps downloads. It has good range. The wifi speeds on 5 ghz and 6ghz network range from 1,000 mbps at the router to around 300 mbps at the lowest point in my house. The 2.4 Ghz is around 100 mbps at the router and will go down to around 30 mbps at the lowest. I like the traffic analyzer. It's nice to be able to monitor the amount of data being used, if you have data caps from your internet provider. Also, OpenVPN is a feature I use often, to jump on the home network to run Netflix while traveling.

On the down side, I do note that the 2.4ghz wifi often will attempt to change channels to a less congested channel. When this happens, you will lose connection. To get around this, I found it's best to manually select control channel for 2.4ghz. This will get around the lost connection. I'd also recommend manually setting the control channel for 5ghz. You also need to keep an out on firmware upgrades. Some of them have been bad. There have been upgrades that have made the guest network useless, others that have resulted in poor handoffs, etc. But the latest firmware has been solid. Asus also doesn't roll out firmware for this product very often. So, it's best to wait and manually upgrade firmware. The unit also will not create a VLAN. So other than the guest network, which is separated from the main network, you can't create a VLAN.

ET8s works fine with Verizon 5G Home Internet – I've been switching back and forth between Xfinity gig and Verizon Home to take advantage of the new customer internet deals. (E.g., in November, Verizon was giving out free xbox in December Xfinity was giving $200 amazon gift card). The ET8 works fine with Verizon and Xfinity. In fact, switching back and forth is easy, since the it's just one wire from their gateway to the router.

Also one other advantage of using their gateway -- since the ET8t will not create a VLAN, if you want an isolated IOT network, you can use the Verizon (or Xfinity) gateway as the IOT network and port forward to the ET8. This gets around the VLAN issue but still lets you use Open VPN. In our area, Verizon Home is capped at 300 mbps. The ET8 gets full speed and actually, the drop off is much less than with gig Xfinity. Whereas gig drops to 300mbps at the lowest, the Verizon only drops to around 150 mbps at the lowest.
One note other note on Verizon, the first gateway I had from Verizon, the speed varied significantly. The replacement gateways have been much more consistent about maintaining 300mbps. So, if you're getting significant variations at the gateway, you may take to Verizon to see if you can get a replacement.

I am using XT8 which looks similar to this. I think I saw bad reviews on ET8 which was why I went with XT8

I have a mixture of ET8 and XT8s in my house. All 4 of them setup through. One in basement, main, 2nd floor and garage. They have ran solid with minimal issues. I've had to reset one mesh node maybe 2 times in the 2 years I've owned it.

This is fine with caveat that the 6ghz dedicated back haul wifi band has a really short distance before it chooses another band to fall back on ; if you're going dedicated wifi only with no ether net for the satellites than the xt8 is better with a dedicated 5ghz back haul that has a further range https://dongknows.com/asus-zenwif...ch-to-buy/
