Upsides:
Brighter sound (more treble). Bass is much more controlled and less muddy, which is good for sound quality but bad for bass heads. It still performs well for bassy music. I'd say it's a step up in sound quality overall.
Much better control scheme compared to the XM4. Similar noise cancellation and much better transparency mode. Switching between Apple devices is very orderly and predictable.
Downsides:
Much less comfortable, and about twice as heavy as the XM4s. I cannot comfortably wear the APM for more than 30 minutes. After that I can still wear them with some fatigue and discomfort. There is no Bluetooth multipoint. Somewhat worse battery life, and when you have to charge it, Apple's lightning cable sucks.
Conclusion
If you own the XM4, no big reason to upgrade. If you don't - is it worth nearly twice the price and getting a used pair, compared to a new pair of XM4s? No way, the XM4 are better value for sure. But if you want Apple ecosystem and sound quality, the APM beat the XM4. I own both and use the APM 80% of the time, and then the XM4 when the APM starts to hurt my head. Also consider the Sennheiser Momentum 4, which may be the best value of all (but might not have the best ANC).
