Incredible deal for one of the best x86 handhelds out now. Yes there is a newer version which significantly improves battery life and only slightly improves performance. This first gen model is still very capable.
Paid $400 for my fair condition last year. I use it more than my console. So far it's handled Howgarts legacy, Ghosts of Tshima, spiderman remaster and miles morales all on high settings. It's indeed capable but make sure an outlet or powerbank is around cause it gives me about 45 mins on battery alone. Power source also enables higher gaming performance.
I have legion go and I see the benefit of having a larger and better screen but your arms get really tired after playing for 30 mins.

How do you install games on the Ally?

There's newer wave of handhelds on the horizon so I'm not sure it's that great of a deal to be honest.

Yes. I don't think there's a real fix for it, other than the newly designed model in black, ROG Ally X that cost significantly more.

It's exercise while you play! That's a benefit you don't get with the Ally ROG.

The newer handhelds are coming at over $700. The ones that are coming out at $500 are probably relatively similar in performance

The Switch 2 will be more powerful, but it's a different set of games you'll have access to of course. It will likely be around $400 too and there is no way Nintendo will charge $500 for one. With that said, it's console games you'll have access to while a portable windows device like this will allow you to run anything you want granted that you know how to do so. If as a simple plug and play device, you'll have access to Steam and be able to install other launchers like Ubisoft's/EA/Blizzard if you have an existing PC library with them. Emulators is where there is tinkering needed if you want to run Switch and retro games.

This is a good deal. I bought a second one of these a week ago (had one for about year already), and just got the BB price match today. It is more than capable, and new gear that comes out over the next year will be nearly twice the price. It will run pretty much anything you throw at it for gaming, and if you want a backup PC, you can get a $40 dock for it and attach a full keyboard, mouse, and screen and run your regular Windows apps.

It's widely considered that the Switch 2 will be less powerful. Go ahead and Google "is switch 2 more powerful than rog ally"

Possible issue with SD card reader frying your card. It may be a good idea to have one in the slot so that, if the issue has to happen, it happens before the warranty expires.

Otherwise, great all-around device which - as others point out - is a full Windows machine in addition to a gaming handheld.

So they double as workout weights? Sounds like added value.

Z1 Extreme battery life is crap if using it for handheld capability, but if you're going to use it like a switch and dock it, it is awesome. I have it hooked up with the 65 watt asus dock/charger to my tv, and use Xbox controllers. Works flawlessly. Runs Baldur's Gate 3 in 1080p at 60hz with no problems which is a pretty intensive game on a system. If you dock it you basically have docked steam/xbox/pc gaming system.

In theory, this has been fixed in newer HW versions. As a point of reference, I have an old HW version and the SD reader still works fine. I realize that this is probably due to luck ... I've also got a 2TB SSD in mine so that I have enough space to dual-boot Windows and Steam OS. I have mine set up with a shared game partition for Steam between the two, so even if my SD reader does go, I should be more-or-less OK. My hot take is just upgrade the SSD instead of buying an giant SD card for almost the same money (~110 for a decent 1.5TB SD card, $140 for a decent 2TB SSD) and you'll be good to go.

Are there any rumors about Steam OS for this console?

I bought one of these for this price in November for Xmas. My son's are big pc gamers and they love it.

I use it to play my PS4/5 games and it works near perfect.

This thing is awesome. Probably the best electronic device I have purchased in a very long time.

A bummer that the sd card reader is apparently defective as I would use that as my emulator storage.

Other then that, this has not only met but significantly exceeded my expectations.

I'll probably have to get another one within the next year or two as this one gets so much use and having an extra to play while the other is in use would be optimal. Probably will go with the x as it will be around this price then. or maybe the rog ally 2 when that is eventually released.

Great job Asus...you have a winner here!

Legion GO will be this price soon, it was last BF. It's a much better system in terms of battery life and screen size and able to remove controllers
