The 420 basically gives you the same performance as this minus DV.
Regularly the difference between DV vs HDR isn't significant especially for the price difference.
Just look at Samsung, they exclude DV and people rave about their PQ.

Having used both, I will take the processing of the Panasonic player.
I do give up DV and SACD & DVD-A support.
The processing of HDR is so good the difference isn't huge usually and I haven't listened to multi channel music in ages.
I also had the known issues with Sony players and the manual switching of DV is a pain.
There is a guy that posted possible fixes to those issues on the Sony post.
I know on the Sony line, bigger one is significantly beefier

Which one is better?

It looks like all Pana BD 4K players are on sale so I'm looking at the 154 @$149 and the 420 @$199. Comparing the two it looks like the big difference is the 420 has an additional HDMI port, which I don't need. Is there some other factor that makes the 420 worth spending $50 more?
All I need is:
1) dependability - will play any commercially pressed DVD/BD/BD4K without stalling
2) good heat dissipation (will be placed a cabinet)
3) Dolby Atmos audio.
My bedroom TV is a 3 y.o. bottom of the line LG 4K (42") so HDR 10 vs Dolby Vision, etc. is a non-factor since this set only supports fake HDR.

If so just get the cheaper one.
Thee biggest differences between the 154 vs 420, the 420 includes the Optimizer & HCX processors.
Significant benefit over the 154 and well worth $50 IMO.
As someone pointed out you could check for open box, I was in BB earlier this week and they had a 420 for $120.
I have an LG B2 65" OLED. Is Dolby Vision really $350 worth of difference between the two? I've had no issues playing on the PS5. Just don't know how much of a difference there is in picture quality to the average person.
I live in an apartment so audio is irrelevant.
The Panasonic has very limited streaming capability and no Dolby vision capability at all.
I bought the 420 for $98 open box a few weeks ago so you might want to check local open inventory at Best Buy stores near you.
I have owned an 820 for at least a couple of years now...its ok and frankly never been ecstatic about it. I paid about $240 open box
if money is an issue always spend the extra money on your display versus the player
As for streaming none of these can touch the $35 4K Roku that is on sale right now

Personally, I wouldn't use the PS5 to run movies as you'll be wearing out the laser reader faster. I was at a couple of different video game shops and one of the owners mentioned that PS5s breaking is what keeps him making more money as the design of the console isn't reliable. It kind of shows why Sony has created the PS5 slim with a detachable disc drive.
