I have a Legion Go and my Wife has the Ally,

Legion Go has a better-looking screen and more immersive since the size is 8.8in vs 7in. This comes out to be approximately 66% larger screen area on the Legion Go vs the Ally. Legion Go feels like you're looking at a small tablet screen vs a phone screen. Using the Legion for windows is usable where it's harder to use windows on the Ally.

Coincidentally, the Ally is much more portable than the Legion Go (Shocking right)

The Legion Go has a quieter fan vs the Ally. Also, the Ally gets warmer feeling especially on the screen.

Ally has a better, more streamlined software experience. Legion go software has some quirks, but the software is leagues ahead of it when it first launched and nice to use now.

The buttons on the Ally are a little better feeling but the joy sticks on the Legion Go feel better.

The speakers (if you use integrated speakers) are much better on the Ally vs the Legion Go. Ally speakers sound like a laptop speaker and the Legion Go sound like a tablet speaker. I use Bluetooth headphones mostly on both devices.

The kickstand on the Legion Go is a great addition, use it almost every time I use the device, had to get a case for the Ally with a kickstand but it's still not as nice.

I like the IO of the Legion Go more than the Ally. Two USB ports is better than the one on the Ally and Asus ROG XG Mobile Interface on the Ally that isn't really compatible with anything other than Asus Ecosystem.

Although all companies can be sketchy, I think Asus is a bit more scandalous to consumers. Seems like they have a track record of leaving some consumers high and dry with warranty repairs and such. I don't have any direct comparison with this but only the perception online.
Both are great - it's more a question on portability imo.

Here are some reddit posts asking the same with much more knowledge than I have.

IMO most generally lean towards the ally with it's smaller body and screen supporting variable refresh. That said, people who have the Legion Go love it so I'm not helping much lol
Same cpu and ram, the legion has bigger screen and detached able controller

well worth it at this price. IMO the X revision isn't worth $300 more.

How would it compare to the Legion Go?

Would you say it is 100 more than this price? 200?

I think if the X revision had oled screen, 32GB of ram, and hall effect joysticks, then maybe it would justify the increase. Maybe I am asking too much...

At 325 it seems worth it to take a chance

$100 more? Yeah cause the SD card slot is probably not going to break and the storage on the X is 1tb instead of 512gb

I've got an open-box fair available for about $325 plus tax. Anyone with any thoughts on that? It would be my first portable and I wouldn't bother with the SD card because I'd just install an SSD. I've been reading recently that Steam OS is likely going to be available to install on the Ally at some point. Apparently, Valve sees the opportunity in front of it and may very well be prepping for a release of Steam OS.

My buddy bought a fair condition for around that price recently from BB. He used a magic eraser to wipe away a few dark scuffs and it looked good as new. He was able to ask the employees if he could inspect the fair ones in person and take the best option. We were both surprised by the fair rating. I would have considered it B+, or A- after the magic eraser cleaning. Hope this helps.

This is where my head is at. Price is too good and the benefits of Oled SD are slim to none when I can get SteamOS on the Rog Ally E, assuming by Q4 2024.

The drawback is likely some tinkering required, but I'm okay with that.

Don't forget the SD card melting issues. Make sure to inspect the open box versions before you buy

I purchased 2 fairs and 1 good condition last month. The plan was to open it and check them at the store. I was fortunate to have the manager to help me out and we were just shooting the shit.

The 2 Fairs were completely clean, came with box and all accessories there.
The Good was somehow in a bubble wrap with 0 accessories.

Manager, "huh that's weird this should not have been marked good"

I asked him about the discrepancies, he said usually when the stores have a lot of open box stock in these, they will mark the majority as Fair to set a lower price to get the item out quicker.

So it's oddly enough, it's not always based on condition of the item, it depends on stock as well.

I've also had a few excellent and good conditions items and they were complete shit... Sometimes they weren't even the same item.

So definitely take chances with Fair items especially items that were known to have large stocks, but highly recommend checking it at the store. It gets very weird trying to return it when you received the wrong item. The look they give you..

I appreciate the reply from you and the other couple users. I'm getting ready to head out to deliver mail and will be thinking about this off and on all day. Birthday is Saturday so I'm due to treat myself with something 🤷
