there is zero reason to put 64gb of ram in this machine.
It depends on your needs. For most users, 64GB of RAM might be overkill, but if you're running memory-intensive applications, virtual machines, or working with large datasets, it can be beneficial. It can also future-proof your system and improve overall performance.
I've been preferring AMD for a few years now. Intel has had lots of issues with their processors lately, and AMD has had better bang-for-buck.

4k video/game rendering and up should be the only reason for 32gb and up.

Could be running VMs which are RAM hungry

This or Lenovo - Yoga 7 2-in-1 14" 2K Touchscreen Laptop - AMD Ryzen 7 8840HS with 16GB Memory - 1 TB SSD?

Which is no longer on sale but was recently.
Check the form factor for this laptop. These are not as deep as Lenovo, so not much space for resting hands

Anyone familiar with the build quality? Hinge durability in particular?
I have this laptop and have used it for a couple of years. Its solid. Much thinner than the earlier models. I spent over $900 and was happy with it, so for this price it's definitely worth it.

300 nits, that's at low end of acceptability standard
I use it for teaching and write on it often. I found that I had to get a decent active pen to write well (not shaky), but the resolution is good.

I have the Yoga 7. It's a stronger build material and maybe has a barely better screen. The HP has more USB connections though. Yoga has only 1 USB A slot. The HP also has below average performance on long tasks. Thermal throttles heavy from the review I read.
Can confirm it gets hot. I run simulations on this machine (and sometimes video editing - kdenlive and handbrake) and if it's going to running for a little while I'll point a usb fan at it to keep the temperature down. However, I run linux and not too sure what it might be like for windows.

Any reason to get this over the yoga 16"? I prefer to have numpad and bigger screen. The msrp for this is higher than the yoga that's currently on sale. This one doesn't have finger print and the 16" will probably run cooler right?

Depends on what your doing. Since this uses shared system ram for the vram, that could come in handy in certain workloads. This laptop might have a certain use case for certain applications that uses a lot of vram, this could have more vram than dual RTX 4090s

Having said that, a system like this needs 32gb

But my wife running a handful of chrome tabs, a web based CRM, outlook and a single excel spreadsheet has 16gb maxed out and stuttering - HP Envy convertible.
Had to give her my 15" HP that I actually could bump to 32gb to give her enough ram to do what I would of, 4 years ago, considered mundane tasks.

Maybe they don't need 64.

16 isn't enough anymore for anything you're using for beyond school.

My current laptop is a 24 core desktop replacement with 96GB of RAM. I bought this exact model in addition as a rmore portable, and still powerful machine and returned it for 2 main reasons:

It was capped at 24W even though it's capable of steady 30W performance. Thanks, HP!
With a browser and a game running, I was already using 16GB of RAM. Keep in mind that the iGPU also uses system RAM.
Third reason: screen had backlight at edges issues, but those were bearable.

Instead I just purchased a V3 Minisforum 3-in-1 tablet with 32GB of RAM with the Newegg 10% student discount, because there's no way to get a 64GB machine that doesn't break the bank, and it's also usable as a 2 lbs thick-ish ltablet. It's got 4 full cores and four Zen4c cores and double the RAM and can run at 28W sustained. Normally 950, purchased for 855.

I want to run VMs, game and use it for more serious multitasking, and the last thing I want is to have to close apps in order to use other ones, or deal with SSD thrashing.

Does it have g sensor to automatically rotate the screen in portrait mode.

TIA

What about just regular gaming? Anyone have experience gaming on one of these?
Eh 780m is what's in legion go and rog ally. It can run most games at low med settings. you probably should get something with a discreet GPU if your interested in gaming .
