I got one of these last week (not my money, thankfully) for a client event. Guests were the type who wouldn't use the hotel WiFi with a web-based gateway that requires an email address. Piggybacked off the hotel network and set up a custom network ID with access password so users could get right on without the login page, and it worked like a charm. Guests appreciated the easy access and client was happy that the network name was their stock symbol.
Or just turn your hotspot on in your phone settings.
If you have an Android phone and want to use your data allowance with another device, PDANet+ app is your friend.

This is fantastic news. Thank you for your input helping me solve this issue I am facing. I appreciate it!
Do note that VPN tunneling to your "home" network means your router's download speed is limited by your home upload speed. Pretty logical but easy to forget. If you have fast at home internet speeds you'll have less issues. Fiber is ideal since they typically have symmetrical download/upload speeds. If you are stuck with an ISP or plan that has limited upload(i.e. afaik spectrum 300 down has only 25mbps upload) you might have slow downloads with that setup. Still enough for light web browsing and a few video streams if your home network isn't being used.

I have Cox Communication, and I just checked and I have 25 Mbps upload. I am hoping to go the Philippines in February to see family there, and hope to work in the evening. The main thing I need to is to be able to join Microsoft Teams meetings (with no video) for work. Do you think using this travel router and 25 Mbps upload will work?

I'm getting it because of this reddit post. It was about MSC cruise where the GL.iNet did not work but this specific one did work: https://www.reddit.com/r/MSCCruis...er_on_msc/Apparently some cruise ships are getting more sophisticated/cracking down on travel routers. It should show on the item page. Also in the checkout, under "Additional Reward details", when I open it it, it says "Prime Card Bonus Offer: Get 5% Back, and additional 10% Back on the amount charged to this card"
That's exactly why I'm getting it. I'm going on this cruise soon.

My main usage is to set up in hotel rooms or cruise ships so multiple devices can share a single authorized account.

I generally like TP-Link products, and I have the older version of this. Getting it set up was pretty finicky. It had three modes and only one of them is controlled by the app. I always forget which mode I need. It also had strange power requirements, so third-party chargers didn't work well. The wi-fi strength wasn't great.

It sounds like this newer model is more compatible with the app and may not have the drawbacks of the original. But the lack of a built-in VPN client (it has a VPN server built in) kind of turns me off from it. I'm looking at alternatives like the GL.iNet travel router which support OpenWRT firmware.

I just bought and used this exact same router last week on royal Caribbean utopia cruise. I bought one device / one user for $20 per day. When in the room, I would register the royal Caribbean Internet to this travel router. And when I would be out of the room, I would register under my phone and run the hotspot (I have a Google Pixel so I can connect to Wi-Fi and broadcast my own wifi simultaneously).

It worked like a charm and worth the money for everyone to use the Internet.
When you say you "register the royal Caribbean Internet to this travel router" how exactly are you doing this? Are you hardwiring the router to your laptop first?

First, put the "mode" in hotspot and then connect your phone / laptop to this travel router's wifi and then open up the tplink setup page (http://192.168.0.1/) and follow the setup which scans for wifi. Connect to Royal ship's wifi. Once this is done, you go to onboardicafe.com and login using the credentials for ships wifi you purchased. That is all. If you step away from this travel router, go to the same website (onboardicafe.com) on your phone and login and switch device to your phone. Once you return back to this travel router, simply connect to the travel router's wifi and go to onboardicafe.com and switch device again. Simple as that

Just keep the phone plugged into an outlet. This isn't rocket science, amigo. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
Access to an outlet is not always available when you're on the road.

I tried the portable charger I have to power it but it wasn't enough. Had to use the OEM charger. It needs at least 9v/12v 18w to power it.

I have this travel router connected to the GL.inet Mudi with an AT&T sim (iPad unlimited data sim). Devices are then connected wirelessly to this travel router. Seems to work well. Router did not get hot and the Mudi was barely warm. If my devices were connected to the Mudi, it would have gotten really warm and drained its internal battery quick.

Not a USB modem, but this works well with the USB tethering mode of Android and iOS devices

Just got back from a Royal Caribbean cruise. Successfully used this router throughout the trip and only used the router throughout the trip (never registered it on my phone.) I used a portable battery bank which yielded about 7-8 hours with 4 devices connected. I used the INIU 10,000 mAh power bank [amazon.com]. While in the room, I charged the powerbank and had this connected to a wall charger.

The instructions given by nickm8266 is exactly what i did. It's really simple and easy to use. Just keep in mind, when moving about the ship, especially different floors, give the unit time to reestablish internet. Since you're walking around with the router, your phone will always be connected to the router but the router will be the one hopping from one network to another. Reminder: none of your other devices need to connect to the ships wifi unless you split apart. Then you can use the ships wifi for internal communication.

Finally, VPN. I had set the router up with wireguard along with my home router. It connected fine while on other networks. For some reason, it didn't work on Royal Caribbean. Maybe they're blocking the ports/protocol. I'll try OpenVPN on the next run.

Good Luck and I hope you enjoy your vacation.

Yes, I did carry the router + powerbank with me on the first day but realized I would much rather not carry any extra items with me and hopping between my google pixel phone and this router was not too bad either.
