Have a gt-ax6000 and it's fantastic. 2 years and not a quirk.
Asus can be inconsistent. Prior to gt6000, I was about to give up on Asus routers but decided one last try considering the excellent reviews from trusted sources.
If the 86u is anything like it (it is) you won't need mesh unless a giant property.
I have mine in a 2500 sq ft home with 3 floors and get great reception everywhere, even landscaping lights 100 ft away (ofc Iot utilize 2.4)
