If AMD the best $500 card today is the 7800XT. I'd factor in the cost of a new PSU if it is the same vintage as the the RX 480, today's GPUs hit hard.
The 4070 is the solid Nvidia choice in that spot.
If you can wait about 10 days CES 2025 will happen and we will get the low down on the next gen parts from both companies.
That said, price/performance is likely to be underwhelming with any performance upgrades offset by some sort of price hike, so buying a solid card now with at least a 14 day return window gives you the best flexibility, IMO.

Probably your cpu is outdated for those cards if you coming from rx480.
Everyone keeps talking about waiting and CES2025 etc - but the truth is this, once you wait, new cards out etc and guess what …. you absolutely will need to wait another 6 months after they are released even just for the chance to buy one.
So if you want to wait another whole year, sure, go ahead and wait.
I am still waiting for x870e motherboard and CPU that were released months ago. GPUs are in even higher demand.
I am on all the waitlists and notify email lists from NewEgg, Amazon, BestBuy, B&H. Guess what, still waiting. When I got 2 notifications via email I went on within 2 minutes and poof out of stock. Bots are buying them, eBay is selling them for $1000% profit.
So again, be realistic. Anything newly released will be unobtainable for a long time.
Get this card, enjoy it, and play. In a year or 2 trade it in when new stuff becomes obtainable again.
