Here are the specs [displayspecifications.com]. Originally released in 2017, not that it really matters. It's not a current model, though, and I couldn't find it on HP's website.

Would this or the Dell S2725DS for $120 be a better deal? Looking for a decent gaming monitor for my 11 y/o son.

This for shooters (FPS). Dell for where the response time doesn't matter. Hp 1ms vs Dell 8ms?

Thank you! He plays mostly Rocket League and Fortnite.
Any thoughts on the Cooler Master monitor?

I do agree that the $120 Cooler Master Tempest GP2711 ( https://slickdeals.net/f/18027573-27-cooler-master-gp2711-tempest-1440p-hdr-1000-mini-led-monitor-120-free-shipping ) is a meaningfully better deal overall. However, much like the hp omen in this deal, the gp2711 has some pretty major caveats.
Compared to the hp omen, the gp2711 has far better color, viewing angles, contrast, and brightness, and can properly display hdr content (assuming the firmware has improved from initial release). On the other hand, the gp2711 has black smearing and extremely poor response times, meaning that it's better suited for content consumption and slower paced single player games, not competitive multiplayer games.
Meanwhile, while the hp omen falls behind in almost all other metrics, it doesn't have black smearing and its response times are very good. For those who play games where response times matter (such as fast paced fps or multiplayer), or just can't tolerate the black smearing intrinsic to the low end va panel, this hp omen monitor is better.
That being said, while the panel in the hp omen monitor is far higher end than those found in normal budget tier garbage tn monitors, it's still ultimately let down by the panel technology. It has very poor viewing angles, functionally 8bit color (6+frc) with mediocre gamut coverage, poor contrast, and nonexistent hdr support. Unless you're a competitive multiplayer fps player who really wants 1440p instead of 1080p and can't afford a 240hz monitor, this monitor isn't an amazing deal, though it's not terrible.

Ultimately, if you can tolerate the black smearing and awful response times of the $120 gp2711 (linked above), go for the gp2711. If you need a 1440p monitor below $140 where response time is absolutely paramount and visual quality is secondary, go for the hp omen in this deal. If you want a balance between response times and visual quality in a similar price class, spend an extra $30 for one of the various ~$150 165hz+ 1440p ips monitors that occasionally go on sale.

Got this back when it first came out. Manufacturers used to have to pay nvidia for a physical g-sync module that by itself cost around $150.

History lesson aside, I still use it for competitive gaming since TN has the best response times. Viewing angles are good enough since you're usually directly in front of the monitor when gaming. Colors are also comparable to IPS when directly viewing

You're unlikely to find a 400Hz TN monitor anywhere near $120 unless you stumble upon a lucky deal on Facebook Marketplace.

TN panels remain a staple in the competitive gaming scene. While they might lack the vibrant colors and wide viewing angles of IPS panels, these older TN monitors often outperform most 240Hz IPS models in motion clarity, making them ideal for fast-paced gaming.

However, the ports on these older monitors have limitations:

HDMI 1.4: Maxes out at 85Hz at 1440p or 144Hz at 1080p.
DisplayPort 1.2: Limited to 144Hz at 1440p.

These monitors are a solid choice for FPS fans on a budget. In this price range, there's not much competition for new TN monitors. BenQ offers one at a similar price, but it's capped at 75Hz and their higher end models pick up at over twice the price.

What is the use case for buying a TN panel over IPS or VA? Is there even one?

Response times mainly. VA panels are a half step between IPS and TN. I absolutely hate TN panels. I had a TN panel in my laptop, and my first step was finding a replacement. You setup to watch some media, and then you stretch out to get comfortable then you find the image inverted and went to crap because of terrible viewing angles. I would rather go back to a CRT or get an oled. When people talk about response time that more refers to ghosting or smearing when fast movement occurs. It doesn't necessarily mean it has lower input lag. Crts are near instantaneous, and some OLEDs have a response time around 0.03ms.
