Got an open-box one for $388 last time when there was a price error. Still in transit.
I have this laptop.

Screen is stunning and outclasses many laptops in the 1200+ range, although resolution is a bit low for professionals. It is highly color accurate and works great for photo edits. It's also much more readable in direct sunlight than you'd expect from a laptop.

Sound is decent; excellent detail and staging for it's size, but zero bass. It is plenty loud once you enable the "volume booster" sitting. That makes it passable for light media consumption (great YouTube machine in the kitchen/bathroom), but I wouldn't really watch movies on it without headphones.

You're going to want to upgrade the ram. 16GB is just enough for Windows, Chrome, and a serious productivity app. Even then, it's pushing it. One of the modules is swappable, the other is soldered; it's an easy upgrade.

This is not a gaming laptop, and you'd be disappointed if you intend to game on it. Still, the RTX 3050 will run some titles 2-3 years old perfectly fine.

Thermals are fine. It doesn't get particularly hot, but it's not great at dumping heat either. The CPU does thermal throttle if you let it boost.

Build is plastic, but good. Hell, it's actually Mil spec rated.

Battery is decent. If you do get this laptop, do NOT update the Nvidia drivers past the ones on ASUS's website, or install the Windows 24H2 update. Both are known to mess with the dGPU sleeping (even if you manually disable it), tanking your battery life from 7 hrs 30 mins watching video to 3 hours 30 mins. Yes, I verified this personally with overnight BatteryMon drain tests. Web browsing with a YouTube video playing on another window will last about 5-6 hours. The USB-C charging feature means you can extend your runtime with a power bank.

There's also another quirk - the USB-C ports on ASUS laptops are a bit... Quirky. Sometimes one will just stop working, and won't come back unless you fully drain the battery or open up the laptop to pull the battery. Thankfully it's not too hard to open up, and the other USB-C port will function normally, but it's still important to mention.

Overall, this is a good creator laptop for the money. I personally use it as 3D modeling station and content creation machine. The battery life and screen also makes a decent travel work laptop; you can do light work / watch movies on flights without much worry.

I just bought this open box for $588. Can anyone chime in who actually owns this laptop? How hot does it get? Is the fan noise bad?
Would you buy OPEN box again? I'm trying to decide if I should go OPEN or NEW....

Mine was open box, came off as a shelf display.

Bought the BB protection plan just in case my oled screen starts to burn in down the road.

380 OTD for the laptop. A good pickup for sure!

No regrets

The USB C on this laptop is funny. They both support display but if you intend to use one cable to connect this laptop and the monitor, it's not going to work. For some reason, it can't automatically power and send display signal. Now if you power the display separately, then the USB c works. I had a certified thunderbolt 4 cable, and still didn't work. It worked well for all other laptops

Thank you, which RAM do you suggest. Any links for a decent one?

While Crucial is good stuff indeed if you care about getting the most performance they are not very ideal. Micron is behind Samsung and Hynix in DDR5 and for whatever reason Micron's tRFC timings are significantly higher than OEM Samsung/Hynix. This will affect your 1% lows the most. So while I would definitely recommend Crucial to the average Joe, if you care about getting the most performance, this is... not ideal. That is it

If you want the absolute best performing RAM then Kingston Fury is it - they have the tightest timings overall on the market

I just bought a more powerful version, and never runs hot; I don't game but do do graphic design and am always guilty of having multiple tabs open. So far, wonderful. And the screen and its color accuracy are gorgeous.I would definitely get this at this price--in fact, considering the specs, this is admittedly a much better deal. In hindsight, would probably also get an extended warranty... The deal seems too good to be true (for me, $1049 with i9 ultra, 24gb RAM, a 2tb SSD, and lots of slots for expansion, with a case that gives easy access). I've been looking at reviews and can't find much other than Asus' crappy warranty: what's the catch?

Any DDR5 5600Mhz stick will do just fine. All that stuff about timings and what not only matter for gaming, and this laptop simply is not a gaming machine. Creator apps like Photoshop/Blender/Lightroom/After Effects/Fusion 360/Solidworks could not care less about timings.

In short, any DDR5 5600Mhz stick from 16GB-32GB will make you plenty happy. 16GB (24GB total) would be enough for hobbiest level work, 40GB (32GB total) is enough for professionals.

This is correct productivity applications could give less a damn about timings. But as reported in an earlier thread the 3050 is fed 95W which is gaming laptop-level of performance. All about the user's priorities

I somewhat disagree. I bought the open box u9 version 2tb 24gb ram last week for $434 w/ tax. So I spent the last few days testing a bunch of AAA games that I have on EPIC/Steam. Games like Witcher 3, Elden Ring, Red Dead Redemption 2, Grand Theft Auto V, Death Stranding, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Control all play smooth at mostly high settings. Safe to say last gen tittles from the PS4/XBOX ONE should play fine/great on this laptop.

I got two open box models of these and they both emit some sort of coil whine/electrical noise at idle or light load... this can't just be a coincidence right? It's quite audible, but those with less sensitive ears will have to put theirs to the keyboard to hear it. Anyone else have this issue?

edit: after a BIOS update from v306 to v308, the coil whine was greatly reduced

edit2: after spending a day with this laptop, I noticed screen flickering at lower brightnesses... turns out it uses a monitor with pwm dimming at a rate of only 60Hz (this is separate from refresh rate). If you find yourself getting eye strain or headaches all of a sudden after using this laptop for awhile, then this is probably the cause.
